It seems like life never slows down for the parent of a 4 year old…
Every weekend we have something planned or something going on. A family get-together, playdates, projects, etc. This upcoming Mother’s Day weekend is no different.
However, this is the first Mother’s Day where my family and I won’t actually be at home. We will be going up to Washington D.C. for a 4 day (well, 3.5 since we’re not technically leaving until this afternoon) weekend. My son loves the National Zoo as well as the Museum of Natural History.
I didn’t want to leave the mothers in my life empty-handed this weekend, so last night, after getting home late from running errands, getting my son a haircut, grabbing a bite to eat, and maybe a little shopping… I did a rather quick little photoshoot. I’ve got to give it to my son. He behaved EXTREMELY well, and very cooperative during this process, even though I know he was tired and ready for bed.
My wife had bought me a roll of 53″ thunder grey seamless paper for Father’s Day (a bit early). I figured this was as good a time as any to break it out and give it a try. I also eyeballed a nice wooden crate last time we were at Walmart. She was kind enough to run out after work and pick one up for me. 🙂
The costume I picked up on Amazon. It was the cutest outfit ever. The newspaper I created from a template I found on the internet. If you are able to zoom into the photo, you can actually read the stories I typed up. I didn’t feel right just putting random text on the page.
I think after setting up and after taking pictures, the whole process maybe took 10 minutes altogether. To me, that was extremely quick, especially considering working with a child lol.
Setup was pretty simple. I sat the crate and my child on the seamless. My wife was my voice activated lightstand for the speedlite behind, and to camera left. I had another speedlite in a 28″ softbox slightly to camera right. You can see the diagram for more technical info.
I took maybe 20 photos, and due to it being late already, I only processed a few of them. I wanted the photos to have a vintage feel, kind of like how the colors looked on old LIFE magazines. Processing them with perfectly balanced color just didn’t give them the same feel in my opinion.
Here are a couple of the resulting shots.
Happy Mother’s Day to all of you ladies that put up not only with all of your children’s crap, but your significant other’s as well. 🙂

“A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.” ―Washington Irving
